Originated from Fujian, this type of ware has simple shapes, but the special effects caused by the glaze make each one unique. Some of the patterns are known as "hare's fur," "oil-spot," and "partridge feather." They are caused randomly as excess iron in the glaze is forced out during firing. Jian Zhan achieved its high prestige during the Song Dynasty.
